Background Information

Prior to the 2021 Colorado Legislative Session, radon testing and mitigation was not a regulated profession. In 2019, Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) published a Sunrise Review to determine the need for radon contractor regulation. The report documented cases of fraudulent radon measurement, false advertising related to radon measurement, improperly installed radon mitigation systems, and fraudulent mitigation systems.

What was CO Tracking’s role?

Colorado Tracking summarized home radon test data to be used in legislative testimony during the 2021 Colorado Legislative Session.

What product or output came from CO Tracking’s role?

Colorado Tracking provided home radon test result data to the Colorado Radon Program, indicating that approximately 50% of unmitigated homes in Colorado have radon levels above the action level of 4 pCi/L. This data was used by the Colorado Radon Program Manager during legislative testimony to highlight the magnitude of Coloradoans that may be impacted by harmful radon levels and to advocate for licensure of radon professionals.

What action or decision was taken to resolve the problem?

The Colorado Legislature passed HB21-1195, which establishes a licensure program for contractors conducting radon tests and home mitigations.

What was the outcome of this action or decision?

The passage of HB21-1195 establishes a licensure program for radon professionals in Colorado, effective July 1, 2022. This program will ensure Coloradoans receive accurate and reliable services from radon contractors, eliminating bad actors.
